Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to reshape the structure of the nose and is preferred for both aesthetic and functional needs. Also commonly referred to as nose reshaping surgery, this operation helps achieve a nose appearance that is more harmonious with the facial features. At the same time, it can also contribute to the improvement of breathing functions.

Rhinoplasty, which is planned individually by expert surgeons, is safely performed thanks to modern surgical techniques and offers long-lasting results. This article covers the most frequently asked questions about rhinoplasty in Turkey.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical operation performed to change the shape and structure of the nose. The nasal anatomy consists of bones in the upper part and cartilage tissue in the lower part.

During the rhinoplasty operation, bone, cartilage, skin, or several of these structures together can be reshaped. Rhinoplasty is completely planned according to the individual’s facial structure, anatomical features, and expectations.

Aesthetic rhinoplasty improves the appearance of the nose, supporting facial balance and proportions. Procedures such as correcting the hump on the nasal bridge, lifting the nasal tip, or reducing the size of the nostrils are among the corrections performed within this scope.

Functional rhinoplasty, on the other hand, focuses on eliminating breathing problems. Especially by correcting the curvature of the nasal septum (septal deviation), it is aimed to facilitate airflow. In most cases, aesthetic and functional goals are addressed together.

Rhinoplasty can also be performed to correct congenital structural problems, repair after trauma, or eliminate breathing problems.

Modern rhinoplasty techniques used today aim to achieve natural and face-compatible results. When performed by experienced surgeons, it provides a balanced and aesthetic appearance without disrupting facial aesthetics. For this reason, rhinoplasty is one of the most frequently preferred plastic surgery procedures worldwide and can positively affect individuals’ self-confidence.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Rhinoplasty is generally performed as an outpatient procedure, and patients are usually discharged on the same day.

The operation can be performed under general anesthesia or with local anesthesia accompanied by sedation. The choice of anesthesia method is determined based on the patient’s condition and the scope of the procedure to be performed.

The surgeon chooses one of the open or closed rhinoplasty techniques according to the patient’s needs. In the closed rhinoplasty method, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars from the outside. This method is generally preferred for more limited corrections.

Open rhinoplasty involves making a small incision in the skin tissue between the nostrils and allows the surgeon to see the nasal structure more clearly. This technique is used especially in cases where extensive changes are planned.

During the operation, the nasal skin is lifted, and the underlying bone and cartilage structures are reshaped. When necessary, cartilage can be taken from inside the nose; when greater structural support is required, cartilage grafts from the ear or rib can be used.

By correcting septal deviation, breathing function can be improved. After all adjustments are completed, the skin is repositioned and the incisions are closed with sutures.

Today, 3D imaging systems facilitate preoperative planning, while ultrasonic surgical instruments allow bone procedures to be performed more precisely and in a controlled manner. Thanks to these advanced techniques, more natural, balanced, and predictable results are obtained.

How Long Does Rhinoplasty Surgery Take?

The duration of rhinoplasty surgery varies depending on the scope of the procedures to be performed and the complexity of the nasal structure. Generally, the rhinoplasty operation lasts between 1 and 3 hours. While minor corrections can be completed in a shorter time, extensive structural changes or additional procedures such as septum correction may cause the duration to be longer.

Special approaches such as ethnic rhinoplasty may also take approximately 3 hours depending on the patient’s anatomical features. The operation duration does not include anesthesia preparation and postoperative observation time. Experienced surgeons complete the operation safely and efficiently thanks to planned and effective techniques.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Recovery Process

Although the recovery process after rhinoplasty varies from person to person, it generally progresses gradually. Immediately after surgery, swelling and mild bruising may be seen around the nose and eyes. These symptoms gradually decrease within the first few weeks. During the first week, the nose is supported with a splint or bandage; this application helps preserve the new shape.

Most of the swelling after rhinoplasty decreases within 4 to 6 weeks, and approximately 90% regresses by the end of about 3 months. However, it may take up to one year for the nasal tissues to fully settle and for the final result to appear. During this process, the shape of the nose gradually gains a more natural appearance.

After rhinoplasty surgery, light exercises are generally allowed after 4–6 weeks. Reducing salt consumption contributes to the swelling subsiding more quickly. Protecting from the sun and following the recommended care instructions positively affects the recovery process. The post-rhinoplasty process requires patience, but the results are long-lasting.

When Is a Rhinoplasty Patient Discharged?

Since rhinoplasty is mostly performed as an outpatient procedure, patients are discharged on the same day after surgery. After the effects of anesthesia have completely worn off, the patient is kept under observation for a short time and then sent home. However, depending on the scope of the operation or the patient’s general health condition, an overnight hospital stay may be recommended in some cases.

After discharge, it is important for the patient to return home accompanied by a companion and to receive support on the first night. The surgeon plans the discharge process by evaluating the patient’s individual condition.

Things to Know Before Rhinoplasty

The preparation process before rhinoplasty is of great importance for the success of the operation. This process begins with detailed consultations with the surgeon. The patient’s medical history is evaluated, the facial and nasal structure is analyzed, and the surgical plan is created. When necessary, possible results are visualized using computer-assisted simulations.

Things to know before rhinoplasty are as follows:
• Share your medical history: Clearly state previous surgeries, breathing problems, and your expectations.
• Have a physical examination: Skin thickness, cartilage structure, and nasal anatomy are evaluated in detail.
• Have photographs taken: Photos taken from different angles are used in surgical planning.
• Clarify expectations: Discuss with your surgeon how rhinoplasty will affect facial proportions.
• Regulate smoking and medication use: Quitting smoking and informing about medications used support healing.
• Create a support plan: Make arrangements in advance for transportation and care after the operation.
• Benefit from simulation tools: Evaluate possible results in advance with 3D imaging.

These steps ensure that the rhinoplasty process progresses in a more controlled and personalized manner.

Rhinoplasty Process in Turkey

Turkey is one of the countries that stands out internationally in the field of rhinoplasty. It attracts attention with experienced surgeons, modern hospitals, and high patient satisfaction rates (90% and above).

In Turkey, services are provided in accredited hospitals with international standards in the field of rhinoplasty. Necessary examinations are performed before the operation, and the surgical plan is clarified with a face-to-face evaluation. The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia and lasts approximately 3 hours.

The postoperative care process includes medication therapy, follow-up examinations, and removal of the splint within 5–7 days. Patients usually stay in the hospital for one night and can return to their daily light activities within 7–10 days.

Among the main reasons why Turkey is preferred in the field of rhinoplasty are expert physicians and advanced technologies. This makes Turkey an attractive and efficient option, especially for international patients.
